Oslo
Norway’s capital, Oslo, is a thriving metropolis that has reached the height of modernity with its sparkling, contemporary architecture and trendy shopping areas. Yet, despite this, it has maintained a lot of its old world charm, particularly in the Gamlebyen (Old Town), the Akershus Fortress and its various medieval churches. Oslo also boasts a number of fantastic museums, including the Viking Ship Museum, as well as the fascinating Vigeland sculpture park, both of which give you a taste for Norway’s rich cultural heritage.
Svalbard Islands
Considered one of the most remote places in the world, the Svalbard Islands, the principle town of which is Longyearbyen, are utterly breathtaking. From the second visitors arrive at this snowy region they are transported to another world, away from modern distractions and the chaos of busy cities. Boat excursions and hikes along the glaciers are a good way to explore this incredible wilderness and observe the Arctic wildlife, which includes polar bears, reindeer and various species of bird.
Tromso
The lively town of Tromso is located in the northern part of Norway and enjoys a vibrant arts and culture scene. While the dark winter months tend to be relatively sedate, the endless sunshine during summer sheds light on some of the most exciting festivals and events in the country. Excursions to see the world famous Northern Lights are available from Tromso as are trips out on the water to spot some of the whales that call this region home.
Bergen
Encircled by seven towering mountains, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and is one of the most beautiful areas of the country. Often referred to as the “gateway to the Fjords”, popular activities include boat trips through these stunning patches of natural wonder as well as hiking and skiing in the nearby mountains. Within the town, cobbled streets wind past the rows of colourful buildings that make up the UNESCO World Heritage listed site of Bryggen.
Sognefjord Region
Located in the heart of the Norwegian Fjords, Sognefjord is an iconic destination that is unparalleled in natural splendour. The landscape here consists of deep, plunging fjords, sparkling water and lush, verdant vegetation that spreads out across the slopes of the mountains. Travellers who venture to Sognefjord definitely shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a ride on the Flam railway, one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, or to hike through the stunning glaciers.
Lofoten Islands
Blessed with a wealth of gorgeous scenery, Lofoten comprises rugged mountains, pristine beaches with perfect white sand and sparkling turquoise water that laps gently against the shore. While the temperature here doesn’t allow for much sunbathing, these stretches of coastline are ideal for walking along, admiring the scenery as you go. Hiking through the untamed wilderness of the Lofoten Islands is a popular choice for active travellers and whale watching trips are a great way to get up close and personal with the local wildlife.
