Useful tips for planning your tailor-made holiday to Cambodia

How long would you like to holiday in Cambodia for?

Cambodia's main attractions of Phnon Penh - capital city and international transport hub, and Siem Reap - gateway to the temples of Angkor, can easily be visited in as little as six days. With anything longer than this you can add to your itinerary lesser-visited temples outside of the Angkor complex, spend a little time on the beach, explore the charming coastal towns or go in search of the rather cute Irrawaddy dolphins.

What sort of accommodation would you prefer?

There's an ever-improving accommodation range in Cambodia from functional 3 star hotels to superb 5 star properties inspired by colonial France with something to suit all budgets. A number of well-known international chains have hotels in the major cities from Sofitel to Park Hyatt though there's also a fantastic selection of boutique hotels with plenty of style and character. Depending on your itinerary you may wish to mix it up a little using different standards of hotels according to the destination - a large resort with plenty of facilities in one city and a smaller boutique property in another.

What internal transport options would you prefer?

As a relatively compact country most touring itineraries in Cambodia can be completed by car with the average journey time between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap just 5.5 hours. After years of bombing during the Vietnam War, Cambodia's road network requires a fair amount of TLC so be prepared for potholes, traffic and delays especially on routes between lesser-visited destinations. Domestic flights with Cambodia Angkor Airways are available between the major cities and can shave a few hours off travel time on longer journeys. With 1,900km of navigable waterways, Cambodia is an ideal destination to sample travelling by boat, whether it's scenic cruises between Siem Reap and Battambang or on Tonle Sap Lake or a luxury week-long cruise from Phnom Penh to Saigon in neighbouring Vietnam.

What pace of travel would you be comfortable with?

The pace of a tour can make or break your holiday - if it's too hectic you may spend more time tired than excited and if it's too slow you may regret missing out on more sights. Once you know how long you have to spend in Cambodia and what places you wish to visit, our tailor-made team will be able to advise on the amount of time best spent in each place and if required, can work in the odd morning or afternoon at leisure for you to explore independently or simply relax at your hotel.

Are there aspects of Cambodia that you are particularly interested in?

Whether it's Cambodia's tragic recent history that you're passionate about or you have a keen interest in Buddhism, we'll do our best to accommodate your interests by including unique cultural experiences, guided touring to particular spots or fun activities. As you'd expect of a country sandwiched between culinary powerhouses Thailand and Vietnam, Cambodia has a wonderfully varied and tasty cuisine so perhaps consider a cooking class during your visit to take home a skill that'll impress friends and family.

Would you like to combine neighbouring countries with your Cambodia itinerary?

Vietnam and its capital Saigon are a simple day's journey from Phnom Penh and would make a wonderful addition to your South East Asia adventure. From Saigon you can spend a few days cruising the waterways of the Mekong Delta, visiting floating markets and candy industries, or include a luxury beach stay along the coast. From Cambodia you can either fly to Vietnam or take a combination of road transfer and boat. Alternatively, you may wish to combine Cambodia with neighbouring Thailand or Laos.

How you can make the most of your budget

The best way to make your money go further is to stay in 3 star accommodation and travel in the shoulder seasons when the weather is starting to change and prices are reasonable. Peak holiday seasons will see costs of services soar so if you are planning to travel during these busy times, book far in advance to ensure the best prices and availability. If you let us know your approximate budget at the planning stage we will be better able to select hotels that fit within your budget and offer the best value for money.
