Useful tips for planning your tailor-made holiday to Vietnam

How long would you like to holiday in Vietnam for?

Vietnam's attractions span the length of the country from the scenic highlands in the north to the sprawling waterways in the south. The top sites can be comfortably seen in 8-10 days starting in Hanoi and ending in Saigon to save backtracking and allow visits to the numerous attractions that line the coast. If you have two weeks or more you can add in a few days relaxing on the beach or for something more active, work in some trekking with the hill tribes in Sapa.

What sort of accommodation would you prefer?

There's an excellent selection of accommodation options in Vietnam to suit all budgets from small boutique city properties with unique character to luxurious beachside hideaways with world-class facilities. Accommodation is not always just about having somewhere to rest your head - it can be an experience in itself. Spend a night cruising the karst island-studded waters of Halong Bay in a traditional junk boat, an ancient Chinese sailing ship, with yoga on deck in the morning or combine function with fun on an overnight sleeper train on the Reunification Express - a visit to the karaoke carriage is optional!

Would you like to be accompanied by a guide throughout your trip?

We include local English-speaking guides at all the sites you wish to visit in Vietnam on your tailor-made holiday, this way you can learn all about Vietnam's rich culture and history with the inside knowledge that comes with locals who love their home town. If you prefer to be escorted throughout your holiday this can be arranged though prices tend to be costly. Ask us for more details.

What internal transport options would you prefer?

Depending on your chosen itinerary and how much of the country you're looking to see, a mix of transport modes are often required to get around Vietnam including domestic flights, boat rides and overnight sleeper trains. Travelling by overnight sleeper train has the added bonus of saving on a night's accommodation so is perfect for those on a budget, however, it's not everyone's cup of tea so domestic flights are the best alternative for longer distances. If booked in advance flights within Vietnam can be reasonably priced though will add to your overall budget. The extensive canals of the Mekong Delta are ideal for cruising, whether it's a short day tour around the floating markets or a week-long luxury cruise that incorporates the neighbouring country of Cambodia.

What pace of travel would you be comfortable with?

The pace of your holiday will be governed by the duration of your trip and the number of places you wish to include in your itinerary. It's a fine balancing act between seeing as much as possible and having some time at leisure to simply relax. Our specialist tailor-made team can advise you on the best amount of time to spend in each place and, at your request, work in some free afternoons or even days left to your own devices.

Are there aspects of Vietnam that you are particularly interested in?

Whether it's compelling war museums or rural cooking retreats, trekking with hill tribes or diving in coral-rich waters, Vietnam offers a host of experiences that can make a wonderful addition to your visit. If there's a particular aspect of Vietnamese culture or a specific activity you would like to try whilst in Vietnam, let us know and we can recommend suitable options to fit within your itinerary.

Would you like to combine neighbouring countries with your Vietnam itinerary?

Cambodia and its capital Phnom Penh are a simple day's journey from Saigon in the south of Vietnam and makes a wonderful addition to your Southeast Asia adventure. In as little as five days you can see the best of Phnom Penh and spend a day or two exploring the incredible temples of Angkor. From Vietnam you can either fly to Cambodia or take a combination of road transfer and boat. Alternatively, you may wish to start your adventure in Laos before popping across to Vietnam, with Thailand another great multi-country combo option.

How to make the most of your budget

The cost of your holiday to Vietnam will depend on a number of factors, chiefly the standard of accommodation chosen and the number of flights required. For those on a tighter budget Vietnam's ample selection of 3 star hotels is a good place to start with overnight sleeper trains a more economical way of getting around. Another way of stretching your budget further is to travel in the low seasons when the weather may be temperamental but services such as hotels and flights are often cheaper. Having an idea of your budget at the start of the planning process will help ensure we provide you with the best holiday your money can buy.
