Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in Southern Iceland

Trips and Tours to Seljalandsfoss

About Seljalandsfoss

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Iceland, Seljalandsfoss can be found on the country’s southern coast. Located just off the Ring Road, the waterfall is about 30 kilometres from the village of Skógar and situated along the Seljalandsá river. Fed by melt-water from the famous glacier-capped Eyjafjallajokull volcano, the powerful waters plummet 40 metres over a cliff face and into a pretty meadow below.

A one-of-a-kind waterfall, Seljalandsfoss provides visitors with a unique viewpoint. It is the only known waterfall in the world where it is possible to walk behind the cascading waters. Thanks to the shape of the cliff, a footpath runs behind the curtain of water. Incredibly picturesque, the waterfall provides an exceptional photo opportunity – especially on a sunny day when you may catch a rainbow.

Seljalandsfoss is the perfect spot for a picnic, with its serene and beautiful surroundings. Especially during the summer months, when many different wildflowers come out in full bloom and decorate the grass with colour. Take a coat to stay dry from the waterfall’s mist and wear sensible shoes as the path can be slippery. To the west of Seljalandsfoss are several other falls worth visiting, including the striking Gljúfrabúi waterfall.
